Monmouth Women’s Basketball Coach Ginny Boggess Leaving for University of Toledo
After revitalizing the program and ending a 40-year NCAA Tournament drought, Monmouth women’s basketball coach Ginny Boggess is leaving to become the head coach at the University of Toledo, with Monmouth set to undertake a “national search” to find her replacement.
Boggess, who was hired by Monmouth in 2021, took on the challenge of turning around a struggling program that had only won two games the previous season. In just her second year, she led the Hawks to victory in the CAA Tournament, marking the school’s first championship in the league and securing a spot in March Madness for the first time since 1983.
With 21 years of coaching experience, including five seasons at Marquette, Boggess now takes over a Toledo squad that had an impressive 28-6 record last season. The team won the Mid-American Conference regular season title and made it to the third round of the WBIT postseason tournament. She replaces Tricia Cullop, the winningest coach in Toledo’s history, who left to become the head coach at the University of Miami.
Monmouth finished last season with a strong second-place finish in the regular season, achieving a 20-win season for the first time in 13 years. Despite falling short in the CAA semifinals, the team’s overall performance under Boggess was commendable, with a record of 54-42 during her three seasons.
Monmouth athletic director Jennifer Sansevero expressed pride in Boggess’s accomplishments and thanked her for elevating the women’s basketball program. As the university embarks on a search for a new head coach, Sansevero is confident in finding a leader who will continue to uphold the program’s standard of excellence and compete for championships.
The departure of Boggess marks a significant transition for Monmouth women’s basketball, with the university poised to make its first major coaching hire under Sansevero’s leadership. The future of the program looks promising as they seek to build on the foundation laid by Boggess and strive for continued success on and off the court.
