Empowering Evanston Youth Through Rowing: Breaking Down Barriers and Building Community
North Channel Community Rowing (NCCR) is making waves in Evanston, breaking down barriers and diversifying the sport of rowing. Founded by a group of veteran coaches, NCCR aims to make rowing accessible to students of color and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, as the program has seen tremendous growth since its inception.
In just three seasons, NCCR has accepted over 150 kids into its summer camps, with a significant increase in applications each year. The program has even inspired the creation of a new rowing program at Evanston Township High School, providing a pathway for students to continue rowing at the high school level.
Led by co-founder Sandy Culver and co-executive director Michael Wyman, NCCR has been instrumental in changing the face of rowing in Evanston. With a focus on inclusivity and opportunity, the program has welcomed students from diverse backgrounds, including BIPOC and those qualifying for free or reduced lunch.
The success of NCCR has extended to ETHS rowing, with both the girls and boys eights making it to the A Finals at the Midwest Scholastic Championship Regatta. Head coach Luciana Ruiz, a recent Northwestern grad and former rower, has been instrumental in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for student-athletes.
Despite their achievements, both NCCR and ETHS rowing face challenges, including limited resources and the need for a diverse coaching staff. However, the coaches remain committed to their mission of providing opportunities for all students to excel in the sport of rowing.
As NCCR and ETHS rowing continue to grow, they rely on donations and community support to sustain their programs. With a focus on inclusivity, diversity, and opportunity, these programs are changing the landscape of rowing in Evanston and beyond.
