Cycling Star Wout van Aert Begins Rehabilitation, Teammate Jonas Vingegaard Undergoes Surgery

After almost two weeks since his serious fall, cycling star Wout van Aert has started active rehabilitation, while his teammate Jonas Vingegaard has undergone successful surgery for his injuries.

Van Aert, 29, shared a 5.5-kilometer hike on the “Strava” platform with the caption “First shower in twelve days,” indicating his progress in recovery. Meanwhile, Vingegaard, who suffered a serious fall during the Tour of the Basque Country, has had surgery on his broken collarbone. The Visma-Lease a bike racing team confirmed the news, although the timeline for his return to racing remains uncertain as he also sustained broken ribs and a bruised lung.

“He will now recover in the next few weeks. It is not yet clear how long this will take,” the Dutch racing team stated. “He is doing well and would like to thank everyone for the kind words over the last few days.”

Van Aert, who sustained injuries to his collarbone, sternum, and ribs during a race in Belgium, has had to withdraw from upcoming events such as the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. His participation in the Giro d’Italia in May is still up in the air, with sports director Maerjin Zeeman emphasizing the importance of being fully fit before returning to competition.

Despite the setbacks, Van Aert remains optimistic about his recovery, expressing his hope to be back on the bike soon. The cycling world has seen several high-profile athletes sidelined due to serious falls, including Vingegaard and time trial world champion Remco Evenepoel, who also broke his collarbone during the Tour of the Basque Country.

As the cycling community rallies around these injured athletes, the focus remains on their recovery and eventual return to the sport they love.
