Micky Beckett Secures Hat-Trick of World Cup Wins in Palma
Micky Beckett had a sense of déjà-vu in Palma, but this time he banished his World Championship demons by clinching a hat-trick of World Cup wins at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia Regatta in Mallorca.
Despite dominating the ILCA 7 class all week, a disqualification in the seventh race left Beckett vulnerable. Last year’s World Championships saw a similar scenario unfold, with a disqualification opening the door for his main rival, Matt Wearn, to snatch the title.
However, this time around, Beckett managed to avoid any drama and secure victory. Reflecting on his win, Beckett expressed relief, saying, “It was very satisfying that I was able to sail at the front of the fleet, with no drama and stay out of trouble.”
Beckett and Wearn have been the top two in the class leading up to the Olympics, with Wearn claiming victory at both last year’s Olympic Test Event and the Worlds. But Beckett’s recent success in Palma has boosted his confidence as he continues his training for the upcoming Games.
“I’m very happy indeed. It’s vindication really,” Beckett said. “Sailing is a lot of small decisions and doing them as well as possible. My decision-making and risk management was pretty good, allowing me to win the event by quite a large margin.”
Next, Beckett will head to Hyères in France for French Olympic Week, aiming to build on his recent performance as he prepares for the Games in Marseille this summer.
“It leaves me in a good place,” Beckett remarked. “There is still plenty of work to do, and managing form is crucial. I need to pace myself and ensure I am at my best when it counts.”
