Selby Cycling Club Kicks Off Time-Trial Season with Six Mile Course
The Selby Cycling Club (Selby CC) kicked off their time-trial season last Wednesday on a challenging six-mile course near Drax. Riders from all over gathered to test their speed and endurance against the clock, with each participant starting one minute apart from the next.
Specialists in the sport spared no expense, using wind-tunnel tested bikes and gear to maximize their aerodynamic advantage. The routes varied from flat, straight sections to hilly terrain, providing a diverse challenge for the competitors.
Ben Watson from Addform Vive le Velo Team set the bar high, covering the six-mile distance in an impressive 13 minutes and 12 seconds, averaging a speed of 27.27 miles per hour. Local rider Steve Gelder of Selby CC also put in a strong performance, clocking in at 14 minutes and 41 seconds on a road bike.
First-timers were welcomed with open arms by the club organizers and fellow competitors, creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere throughout the event. The next time-trial on the calendar is a ten-mile circular route, set to take place on April 24 at Drax Sports and Social Club.
Time-trials are not just a local affair, as they also feature prominently in international road racing events. Great Britain has produced some top talent in the sport, with riders like Chris Froome, Emma Pooley, and Sir Bradley Wiggins all achieving success on the world stage.
