Lewis Hamilton reveals Niki Lauda’s attempt to restrict his fashion work: “He can’t do this!”
Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 champion, recently revealed in an interview with GQ Magazine how former Mercedes chairman Niki Lauda tried to put a stop to his involvement in the fashion world. Lauda, a three-time F1 champion himself, reportedly pressured Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff to curb Hamilton’s extra-curricular activities outside of racing.
Despite Hamilton’s incredible success with Mercedes, Lauda grew frustrated with the Briton’s interest in fashion. The breaking point came in 2018 when Hamilton attended a Tommy Hilfiger party in New York before the Singapore Grand Prix. Lauda believed that Hamilton’s focus should solely be on racing and not on other pursuits.
Hamilton, however, defended his passion for fashion, highlighting the diversity and inclusivity of the industry compared to the predominantly white world of racing. He emphasized that his commitment to racing was unwavering, as evidenced by his stellar performance in Singapore following the fashion event.
The relationship between Hamilton and Lauda was complex, with the Austrian initially skeptical of Hamilton’s abilities outside of racing. However, over time, Lauda came to appreciate Hamilton’s work ethic and dedication to his craft. Their bond was tragically cut short when Lauda passed away in 2019, leaving Hamilton with fond memories of their time together.
Hamilton fondly recalled the humorous conversations he shared with Lauda and the unexpected similarities they discovered. Despite their differences, the two formed a strong connection based on mutual respect and admiration.
As Hamilton continues to dominate the world of Formula 1, he carries with him the lessons and memories of his time with Niki Lauda, a legendary figure who played a significant role in his career.
