Janine Williams: The 70-Year-Old Cyclist Rowing Across the Atlantic
At 70 years old, Janine Williams is not slowing down. In fact, she is gearing up for one of the most challenging adventures of her life – rowing across the Atlantic Ocean. Williams, along with three other women, will be part of the Cruising Free team setting out in January 2025 to row 3,200 miles from Lanzarote to Antigua. If successful, Williams will become the oldest woman to row the ocean, breaking barriers and inspiring others along the way.
Williams’ journey to this point has been fueled by her lifelong love for cycling. From a young age, she was always active and involved in sports, with cycling being a constant in her life. Even as she raised four children, she found time to cycle and stay active. Cycling became a way for her to stay fit and prepare for the challenges ahead, including the grueling task of rowing across the Atlantic.
As Williams prepares for this epic adventure, she reflects on the changes that come with age. While she may be slower up hills on her bike, her determination and passion for cycling and rowing remain unwavering. She has embraced the mental and physical challenges that come with aging, recognizing the need for more recovery time and adapting her training accordingly.
Williams’ story is not just about personal achievement, but also about breaking stereotypes and creating role models for women of all ages. She hopes to inspire others to pursue their passions and stay active, no matter their age. Through her journey, she aims to show that women can excel in extreme sports, challenge societal norms, and push the boundaries of what is possible.
As Williams sets out on this incredible adventure, she carries with her a message of resilience, determination, and the importance of staying active throughout life. Her story serves as a reminder that age is just a number, and with the right mindset and determination, anything is possible. Janine Williams is not just a cyclist or a rower – she is a symbol of strength, courage, and the power of never giving up.
