Oakland A’s to Temporarily Relocate to West Sacramento Before Permanent Move to Las Vegas
The A’s are leaving Oakland and making a swift move to West Sacramento, with plans for a permanent relocation to Las Vegas in the near future. The franchise announced on Thursday that they will be playing at Sutter Health Park, home of the Sacramento River Cats, starting in the 2025 season.
The decision to move comes after the city of Oakland and the Athletics could not come to an agreement on extending the lease for the Oakland Coliseum, which is set to expire after the 2024 season. Despite efforts to negotiate with Oakland, the conditions for an agreement were deemed out of reach by the team’s owner, John Fisher.
The move to West Sacramento provides a temporary home for the A’s as they prepare for their eventual move to Las Vegas. The team has set a timeline for their arrival in Sin City, with plans to play at Sutter Health Park for the 2025-27 seasons, and potentially in 2028 as well.
Sutter Health Park has a capacity of 14,000 fans, a significant drop from the Oakland Coliseum’s 63,000 capacity. The dimensions of the new park are similar to those of the Coliseum, ensuring a familiar playing field for the A’s.
The Sacramento River Cats, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, will be sharing their home with the A’s for the next few seasons. The River Cats have a history of success in attendance, averaging 5,177 fans per game in 2023.
As the A’s bid farewell to Oakland and look ahead to their future in Las Vegas, fans can expect an exciting new chapter for the franchise. The move to West Sacramento marks the beginning of a new era for the Athletics, as they prepare to make their mark in a new city and stadium.
