UVa Football Focused on Improving Pass Rush for Upcoming Season

The University of Virginia football team faced a significant drop-off in their pass rush production this past season, despite returning their entire defensive front from the previous year. The Cavaliers tied for the fewest sacks in all of FBS, only recording 11 sacks in 12 games and creating just 64 negative yards with those sacks, which was also tied for the fewest in the country.

Head coach Tony Elliott emphasized the need for improvement in the pass rush, especially after the team failed to register a single sack in four games, including key matchups in league play. Players like Chico Bennett Jr. and Kam Butler, who had shown promise in previous seasons, were unable to replicate their success due to injuries and other factors.

As the team entered spring practice, the focus shifted towards refining pass-rushing techniques and fundamentals. Bennett and Butler, both seasoned veterans, are expected to lead the charge in generating more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. With Bennett returning to full health and Butler recovering from his injuries, the coaching staff is optimistic about their potential impact in the upcoming season.

Defensive ends coach Chris Slade has been working closely with the players on improving their hand techniques and overall pass-rushing skills. Players like Ben Smiley and Jahmeer Carter are also looking to elevate their game and contribute to the team’s success in getting to the quarterback more effectively.

With a renewed emphasis on pass rush this offseason, the Cavaliers are determined to bounce back and regain their reputation as a formidable defensive unit. As they continue to fine-tune their strategies and techniques, the team is hopeful that their efforts will pay off in the form of increased sacks and disrupted plays in the upcoming season.
