Pitt Athletics Weekend Recap: April 2023-2024 Season Stretch
As the 2023-2024 season winds down, Pitt athletics teams are making their final push towards the finish line. This past weekend saw a mix of success and struggles for the Panthers across various sports.
In track and field, Pitt had a strong showing at the South Florida Invitational, with first-year Norrah Lemongo setting a personal record in the shot put and senior Ilse Steigenga and sophomore Alesia Rengle also earning top finishes in their events.
The volleyball team traveled to Columbus to take on Ohio State in a spring scrimmage and came out on top with a convincing three-set sweep. Senior setter Rachel Fairbanks and sophomore outside hitter Blaire Bayless led the way for the Panthers in the victory.
Men’s soccer had a tough match against Wake Forest that went to penalties, ultimately resulting in a loss for the Panthers. Meanwhile, the lacrosse team faced a tough challenge against No. 3 Syracuse, falling 16-7 and continuing their struggles in conference play.
In baseball, Pitt managed to salvage one win in a series against Georgia Tech, with pitcher Jack Sokol delivering a solid performance in the lone victory. However, the team struggled with pitching in the other games, leading to losses against the Yellow Jackets.
Softball had a successful weekend, winning their first conference series of the season against Boston College. The Panthers’ pitching was a standout, allowing just seven runs across three games.
As the season nears its end, Pitt athletics will look to finish strong and build momentum heading into the postseason.
