American Danielle Collins Wins WTA Charleston Open Clay Court Title
American tennis player Danielle Collins continued her remarkable run of form by clinching the WTA Charleston Open clay court title with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory over Russia’s Daria Kasatkina. This triumph comes just a week after Collins secured the Miami Open title, propelling her to 15th in the world rankings.
Despite announcing her retirement at the end of the season, the 30-year-old Collins has been playing some of the best tennis of her career, extending her winning streak to an impressive 13 matches. Her powerful strokeplay and strong serve were on full display as she overwhelmed Kasatkina in the final.
Kasatkina, the 2017 Charleston Open winner, put up a tough fight in the semifinals against top seed Jessica Pegula but fell short against Collins in the final. The American’s dominance on the court was evident as she won 95.2% of her first serve points and saved all break points she faced.
Collins’ back-to-back titles in Miami and Charleston have put her in elite company, with the last player to achieve this feat being Serena Williams in 2013. With 22 wins this season, Collins is now tied with world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and fourth-ranked Elena Rybakina for the most wins on the tour.
As Collins basks in the glory of her recent success, her opponents have praised her exceptional talent and personality on and off the court. With her retirement looming, tennis fans can only hope to see more magical moments from the resilient American before she bids farewell to the sport.
