Indian Hockey Captains Join #WhiteCard Campaign on International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
On the occasion of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, observed on April 6 every year, the Indian hockey captains have joined the #WhiteCard Campaign to showcase their commitment towards peace efforts worldwide.
The White Card, just like various color cards in the sporting world, is a symbol to promote worldwide peace efforts. Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh, currently in Perth, Australia, for a five-match series against the home team, expressed his support for the initiative. “Sport has the power to change the world, unite all, and bring people from various religions, sects, states, and even countries together on a common platform to perform as equals,” he said.
Joining him, Indian women’s hockey captain Savita emphasized the importance of sport in breaking down barriers. “Sport teaches us to look beyond language barriers, caste, race, and religion. Through my career in hockey, I have come to believe that sport can empower people, particularly women. Let’s join the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace through the #WhiteCard movement for peace through sport,” she stated.
The #WhiteCard initiative, an annual worldwide digital campaign started in 2013 and supported by the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee, aims to promote social change and foster peace through sport. The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace celebrates the power of sport and coincides with the anniversary of the first modern Summer Olympic Games in 1896.
By participating in the #WhiteCard Campaign, the Indian hockey captains have shown their dedication to promoting peace and unity through the universal language of sport.
