Plans Announced for New Sports Court Near Tower of the Americas in Hemisfair

The Hemisfair District in San Antonio is set to undergo a major transformation with the announcement of plans to build a new sports court near the iconic Tower of the Americas. The project, funded by the McCombs Foundation and Spurs Give, will see the construction of the Red and Charline McCombs Community Court, replacing a stagnant pond that has been a source of unpleasant odors in the area.

The design plans for the new open-air pavilion and sports court were approved by the Historic and Design Review Commission, paving the way for the development of a 35-by-21-yard concrete slab surface with an oblong-shaped roof structure. Surrounding the court will be grass or turf, with additional trees to be planted at the site to enhance the green space.

Hemisfair CEO, Andres Andujar, expressed gratitude to the funders for their dedication to enhancing recreational opportunities for residents. The new sports court is part of the Tower Park vision and use plan, which aims to create a vibrant community space in the heart of downtown San Antonio.

In addition to the sports court, more changes could be coming to the east quadrant of Hemisfair, with talks of UTSA potentially selling or leasing the Institute of Texan Cultures property for the expansion of the Henry B. González Convention Center or the renovation of the Alamodome. Speculation is also rife about the possibility of a downtown sports district or arena being developed on the site.

The McCombs family’s legacy in the Hemisfair District will continue with the new community court, a fitting tribute to their commitment to uplifting the community. With the Spurs also unveiling a City Edition court and uniforms featuring Hemisfair and the Tower of the Americas, the future looks bright for sports and recreation in the area.
