Jamaica Boxing Association President Discusses Future Amid Breakaway Group World Boxing

Jamaica Boxing Association president Stephen ‘Bomber’ Jones has spoken out about the recent developments in the world of boxing, as the sport faces a major shakeup with the emergence of a breakaway group, World Boxing.

Following the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to reject the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) appeal against the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision to strip them of recognition, the boxing world has been left in a state of uncertainty.

Jones emphasized that Jamaica’s decision to join World Boxing was a proactive one, as the country could not afford to miss out on participating in the Olympics. With the IBA’s legitimacy in question, national boxing federations are now faced with the challenge of navigating their relationship with two world governing bodies for boxing.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the IBA’s future, Jones remains confident that boxing and Jamaican boxers will continue to be a part of the Olympics in the years to come. He believes that more federations will come to support World Boxing as the entity to cover the sport of boxing at the Olympic level.

While the situation at the top level of boxing governance may be tumultuous, Jones reassures that it will not trickle down to affect the athletes and the sport itself. He remains optimistic about the future of boxing and is committed to ensuring that Jamaican boxers have the opportunity to compete on the world stage.

As the boxing world adjusts to these changes, it is clear that the sport is entering a new era with the emergence of World Boxing. The coming months will be crucial in determining how national federations navigate this new landscape and ensure that boxing continues to thrive at the Olympic level.
