Massive Crash in Tour of the Basque Country: Vingegaard, Roglic, and Evenepoel Involved

In a dramatic turn of events during stage four of the Tour of the Basque Country, Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard suffered a serious crash that left him with a broken collarbone and several broken ribs. The incident, which also involved race leader Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel, occurred at high speed on the descent from the Olaeta climb, causing a chain reaction that resulted in multiple riders going down.

Vingegaard, 27, was seen on the ground receiving medical treatment for several minutes before being taken to the hospital on a stretcher wearing a neck brace. His team, Visma-Lease a Bike, later confirmed the extent of his injuries and stated that he would remain in the hospital as a precaution.

The crash also forced Evenepoel and Roglic to abandon the race, with both riders being taken to the hospital for evaluation. Australian Jay Vine of UAE-Team Emirates was another casualty of the crash, but his team reported that he was conscious and talking.

The stage was eventually neutralized, with only the original breakaway of six riders allowed to contest the stage win. South African Louis Meintjes of Intermarche-Wanty emerged victorious, but his win was overshadowed by the unfortunate events of the day.

With the main contenders out of the race, Dane Mattias Skjelmose of Lidl-Trek now holds the overall lead. The race organizers announced that the stage times would not be counted for the general classification, and the peloton would go in neutral until the finish line.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that professional cyclists face on a daily basis, and our thoughts are with Vingegaard, Evenepoel, Roglic, and all the other riders involved in the crash as they recover from their injuries.
