Transitioning to 3×3 Basketball: A New Challenge for Singaporean Players
Tay Ding Loon, a veteran basketball player with the Singapore Slingers, has found himself facing a new challenge on the 3×3 court. After seven seasons with the Slingers, Tay decided to join the national 3×3 team at the end of 2023, stepping into a whole new world of basketball.
The transition from traditional 5v5 to 3×3 has not been easy for Tay. The fast-paced nature of the game, with fewer players on a smaller court, requires quick thinking and precise execution. Tay admitted that it was tough initially, especially since some of his teammates had been training with national 3×3 head coach Lazar Rasic for a while.
Despite the challenges, Tay is embracing the new format and enjoying the unique aspects of 3×3 basketball. He highlighted the fast pace of the game and the equal involvement of all players as key factors that make 3×3 exciting and engaging.
The Basketball Association of Singapore is also focusing on developing the local 3×3 scene, with the goal of achieving success at the upcoming SEA Games and potentially securing a spot at the 2032 Olympics. The association has been organizing a national 3×3 league, with monthly tournaments held at various locations across the island.
As Singapore continues to grow its presence in the 3×3 basketball world, players like Tay Ding Loon and national women’s team captain Tang Choy Ting are adapting to the new format and working towards success on the international stage. With the ongoing Fiba 3×3 Asia Cup showcasing the talent and potential of Singaporean players, the future looks bright for 3×3 basketball in the country.
