Tour of the Basque Country Stage Four Horror Crash: Vingegaard and Evenepoel Among Injured Riders
Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard and Belgian ace Remco Evenepoel were among the casualties of a horror mass crash during stage four of the Tour of the Basque Country. Vingegaard suffered a broken collarbone and several ribs, while Evenepoel also broke his collarbone and had to undergo further tests in Belgium.
The crash, which occurred on a descent in northern Spain, also involved riders like Jay Vine, Steff Cras, and Primoz Roglic, who did not finish the stage. Despite the severity of the injuries, it was a relief that they were not more serious given the circumstances of the crash.
Several riders were taken to the hospital, with Vingegaard being conscious and undergoing examination. The crash led to a neutralization of the race until the finish line, allowing a six-man breakaway to compete for the stage win, which was eventually claimed by Louis Meintjes.
The incident added to the recent string of accidents in the cycling world, with Wout van Aert suffering similar injuries in a previous race. The cycling community expressed their concern and well-wishes for the injured riders, hoping for a speedy recovery.
As the race continues with the fifth stage, the focus shifts to the safety of the riders and the challenges they face in such high-speed and intense competitions. The cycling world will be eagerly awaiting updates on the condition of the injured riders and hoping for a smooth and safe conclusion to the Tour of the Basque Country.
