Mohammedan Sporting Club Clinch Maiden I-League Title with Victory Over Shillong Lajong FC
Mohammedan Sporting Club’s long-awaited dream of winning their maiden I-League title has finally come true after a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Shillong Lajong FC in an away match at the SSA Stadium. The win not only secured the title for Mohammedan Sporting but also propelled them to the top-tier Indian Super League.
The match started with a bang as Alexis Gomes scored in the very first minute to put Mohammedan Sporting in the lead. However, Shillong Lajong fought back and equalized through Douglas Tardin in the 15th minute. The decisive goal came in the 62nd minute when Evgeni Kozlov found the back of the net, securing the victory for Mohammedan Sporting.
With this win, Mohammedan Sporting now has 52 points from 23 matches, with one game left to play. They are eight points ahead of second-placed Sreenidi Deccan, who cannot catch up even if they win their remaining matches.
The road to the I-League title was made easier for Mohammedan Sporting after NEROCA FC held Sreenidi Deccan FC to a draw, paving the way for their triumph.
President of the club, Amiruddin Bobby, expressed confidence in meeting all the required criteria to play in the ISL next season, joining the likes of Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.
