Sky Sports Estimates Super League Clubs’ Player Salary Spending for 2024 Season
Sky Sports has caused a stir in the rugby league world with their estimated figures on player salaries for the 2024 Super League season. The broadcaster’s predictions have shed light on the financial landscape of each club, with some surprising results.
At the top of the spending table is Wigan Warriors, who are estimated to be splashing out a whopping £3.1million on player salaries. This comes as no surprise given the club’s stature and success in the league. However, the real shocker comes with Hull FC, who Sky Sports believes are spending below the salary cap at just £1.8million, despite owner Adam Pearson’s claims otherwise.
Hull KR, on the other hand, are estimated to be spending £2.4million, making them the seventh highest spending club according to Sky. The broadcaster claims to have conducted their own research to determine these figures, which were showcased by host Brian Carney in the build-up to Friday’s live games.
The disparity in spending among clubs is evident, with Wigan being the only club to exceed the £3million mark. Catalans Dragons and Warrington Wolves are also estimated to be spending £3million, while Leeds Rhinos, Huddersfield Giants, and St Helens are not far behind at £2.7million.
The revelations have sparked debate among fans, especially considering the supposed level playing field that the salary cap was meant to create. With the decline in the Sky TV deal in recent years, clubs are feeling the financial strain, leading to varying spending habits.
It remains to be seen how these estimated figures will impact the Super League landscape moving forward, but one thing is for sure – the financial side of the game is becoming increasingly scrutinized.
