Jonny May’s Try Propels Gloucester to Victory in European Challenge Cup

Gloucester secured a hard-fought victory over Castres in the European Challenge Cup, with Jonny May’s try proving to be the decisive moment in the match.

The Cherry and Whites, who have been struggling in the league, showed their cup pedigree as they booked a spot in the quarter-finals with a 30-25 win over the French side.

It was a thrilling encounter at Kingsholm Stadium, with Gloucester taking an early lead through Zach Mercer’s try. However, Castres fought back with tries from Loris Zarantonello and Josaia Raisuqe to keep the game tight.

But it was Jonny May who stole the show with a crucial try that put Gloucester in front, a lead they did not relinquish. Max Llewellyn also crossed the whitewash to extend their advantage and secure the victory.

Gloucester’s Santi Carreras was in fine form with the boot, converting all three tries and adding three penalties to keep Castres at bay.

The win sees Gloucester progress to the quarter-finals, where they will face either Sale or Ospreys in a home tie. With their eyes set on a European final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Gloucester will be looking to continue their cup success and add more silverware to their cabinet.

As second seeds in the competition, Gloucester have the advantage of home ties all the way to the final, giving them a strong chance of lifting the European Challenge Cup trophy.

Overall, it was a gritty performance from Gloucester, with Jonny May’s try proving to be the difference in a closely contested match. The Cherry and Whites will now be looking to carry this momentum forward as they aim for more cup success in the coming weeks.
