Area Sports Recap: Salisbury Tennis Victory and Track & Softball Updates
Salisbury’s boys tennis team secured a big win on Thursday, defeating Mount Airy 5-4 in a thrilling match. Coach Roarke Burton praised his team for their performance, singling out Soyer Cornelison and Reid Hlavacek for their standout efforts. Cornelison came back from a set down to win at No. 6 singles, while Hlavacek played an exceptional match to secure a victory at No. 3 singles.
In boys track, Mount Pleasant narrowly edged out Carson and Salisbury to claim victory in a seven-team meet at East Rowan. Salisbury’s Deuce Walker, Finnegan Avery, and Ethan Griffin were among the individual winners, showcasing their talent and determination on the track.
On the softball field, West Rowan emerged victorious against High Point Christian Academy, with Emma Clarke leading the charge with four hits. South Rowan also notched a win, defeating South Iredell 6-3 behind a strong performance from pitcher Eva Shue, who also hit a home run.
In a surprising upset, Carson’s softball team secured an 8-7 victory over A.L. Brown, marking their first win in over a month. Caylee Snow’s stellar pitching and key hits from Peyton Hollar and McKenzie Powers propelled Carson to a hard-fought win.
In college sports news, UNC Wilmington’s Mary Sobataka continues to shine, hitting a home run in a recent victory. Additionally, local standout Kierran “Kiki” Walker has committed to Winston-Salem State after a successful stint at Community College of Baltimore County Essex.
