Stuart Broad backs Ben Stokes’ decision to opt out of T20 World Cup, expresses concerns about Jofra Archer’s injuries
Former England pacer Stuart Broad has voiced his support for Ben Stokes’ decision to opt out of the upcoming T20 World Cup due to fitness reasons. In an exclusive interaction with PTI at the Star Sports Incredible Star Cast studio in Mumbai, Broad expressed his belief that Stokes’ decision to focus on his fitness and return to being the all-rounder he was is the right choice.
“Ben Stokes has made some incredible decisions in his career that have paid off for him. He wants to get back to being the all-rounder that he was, and he feels that getting some workload through the knee in a controlled environment, without the pressure of a T20 World Cup, is the best choice,” Broad said.
While supporting Stokes’ decision, Broad also expressed concerns about Jofra Archer’s ongoing injury issues. Despite Archer’s talent and potential as a match-winner, he has been plagued by injuries that have limited his playing time on the field.
“We’ve not seen the best of Jofra Archer on the field for nearly four years. He’s had awful injury problems which have been very difficult for him to cope with. There’s positivity from him and the England camp that there’s a chance we might see him in the T20 World Cup, which would be a great lift for England fans and cricket fans around the world,” Broad added.
Archer recently surprised everyone by playing a match for his school team in Barbados, despite his ongoing injury concerns. Broad acknowledged the concerns surrounding Archer’s injuries but expressed hope that he would eventually overcome them and return to his best form.
As England prepares for the T20 World Cup in June, Broad highlighted the leadership skills that Stokes brings to the team and acknowledged that his absence will be felt. However, he believes that England has the depth and quality to cover for Stokes as a player.
Having recently retired from playing, Broad expressed his interest in exploring various opportunities within the game, including coaching roles. He emphasized his love for cricket and his desire to remain involved in the sport in any capacity.
As the cricket world eagerly awaits the T20 World Cup, the focus remains on the fitness and availability of key players like Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, with Stuart Broad’s insights providing valuable perspective on the challenges and opportunities ahead for England.
