Hong Kong Athletes Qualify for 15 Events in Paris 2024 Olympics
Hong Kong athletes are gearing up for the Paris 2024 Olympics with a strong showing in five sports categories – cycling, sailing, swimming, table tennis, and windsurfing. As of March 26, athletes have secured qualification in an impressive 15 events, according to documents submitted by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau.
In swimming, Hong Kong’s standout athlete Siobhan Haughey will be a force to be reckoned with in the women’s 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m freestyle, and 100m breaststroke events. Joining her will be Cindy Cheung Sum-yuet and Ian Ho Yentou, competing in the women’s 200m backstroke and men’s 50m freestyle, respectively.
Nicholas Bezy Halliday will represent Hong Kong in the ILCA7 sailing event, showcasing the city’s talent on the water.
While nominations for other events are still pending confirmation, the bureau has indicated that six more sports – Athletics, Badminton, Fencing, Gymnastics, Rowing, and Triathlon – are likely to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
Looking ahead to the Paris Paralympic Games, the China Hong Kong Paralympic Committee has identified Badminton, Table Tennis, and Wheelchair Fencing as potential qualifiers.
To generate excitement and support for Hong Kong’s athletes, the bureau plans to ramp up publicity efforts for the Games, including setting up focal sites with live or replay broadcasting at designated sports centers. Additionally, the Hong Kong Sports Institute has launched a three-phase media campaign to enhance publicity and manage public expectations for the upcoming games.
With Hong Kong athletes poised to make their mark in Paris, the city is ready to cheer them on and showcase its sporting prowess on the world stage.
