AIFF assures support for Igor Stimac ahead of crucial FIFA World Cup qualifiers
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has thrown its support behind national team coach Igor Stimac as India gears up for the final two group games of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers in June. Despite facing criticism following a disappointing loss against Afghanistan and a draw against the bottom-ranked side, the AIFF believes that a change in leadership at this crucial juncture would be a risky move.
Stimac, who has a contract with AIFF until June 2026, has vowed to resign if India fails to make it to the third round of qualifiers. However, a win against Kuwait in the upcoming match could secure India’s spot in the next round and automatically extend Stimac’s contract to 2028.
The Croatian coach is focused on the upcoming clash against Kuwait in Kolkata, calling it “one of the biggest days in Indian football.” AIFF’s acting secretary general has promised Stimac all necessary support for the final two games, with plans for a three-week training camp in Bhubaneswar and Kolkata.
Despite the setback against Afghanistan, India is still in contention for a spot in the third round, currently sitting in second place in the group. With Qatar leading the group with 12 points, a win in the next game could see India eliminate Kuwait and move one step closer to qualifying for the third round for the first time.
The pressure is on for Stimac and the Indian team as they prepare for the crucial upcoming matches. Fans will be eagerly watching to see if India can secure a historic qualification to the next round of the World Cup qualifiers under Stimac’s leadership.
