Cyclist Jonas Vingegaard Injured in Multi-Cyclist Crash in Spain
Two-time reigning Tour de France champion, Jonas Vingegaard, was involved in a horrific crash during a race in Spain on Thursday, leaving him with a broken collarbone and several broken ribs. The incident occurred during the Itzulia Basque Country event, where multiple cyclists skidded off the road at a sharp turn during a descent.
Vingegaard, along with other top names in the sport, including Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic, had to abandon the race due to injuries sustained in the crash. Evenepoel suffered a broken collarbone and right scapula, while Roglic managed to avoid any fractures. The three cyclists were ranked second, third, and sixth, respectively, in the International Cycling Union’s world rankings.
The race telecast showed Vingegaard being taken to an ambulance on a stretcher, wearing an oxygen mask and a neck brace. The crash also resulted in injuries to other cyclists, including American Sean Quinn, who suffered a concussion, a broken sternum, and abrasions.
The stage was altered after the incident, with a section involving a mountain pass being removed. The rest of the stage was neutralized, with times not counting toward the general classification. Louis Meintjes won the stage, while Mattias Skjelmose took the lead in the overall standings.
As Vingegaard faces a recovery period, his participation in the upcoming Tour de France remains uncertain. The event is set to start in Italy on June 29 and will conclude in Nice, marking the first time in a century that the final stage will not be held in Paris due to the Olympics. The cycling community wishes Vingegaard and all the injured cyclists a speedy recovery.
