“Previewing the 2024 Syracuse Men’s Rowing Season: Freshmen to Watch, Key Departures, and Key Matchups”
Syracuse Men’s Rowing Prepares for 2024 Season
Syracuse men’s rowing had a standout season in 2023, with each crew placing in the top 15 at the IRA National Championship and an eighth-place finish in the Ten Eyck Trophy standings. As the Orange gear up for the 2024 season, there are several key storylines to watch.
Freshmen Beck Honebein and Oles Walo are two newcomers to keep an eye on after impressive performances in the fall season. Honebein was the lone freshman on the varsity 8 team that took first at the Cornell Fall Classic, while Walo showcased his skills in the 4V8 and 3V8 races.
However, Syracuse will have to fill the void left by key departures, including half of the Henley Crew that nearly won the Temple Cup Challenge in London last year. Despite the loss of talented athletes, assistant coach Connor Walters is optimistic about the potential of the younger group and the opportunities for new rowers to step up.
Returning athletes like Mack Carr, Cole Nordby, Declan Fry, and Jack Gorman will play crucial roles in maintaining Syracuse’s competitive edge. Additionally, seniors Lachlan Doust and Joe Willis, who represented Australia and Great Britain at the U23 World Rowing Championships, bring valuable experience to the team.
Looking ahead to the spring season, Syracuse aims to have every boat in the A final at IRAs. The Orange will face tough competition against Pac-12 opponents like California, Oregon State, and Stanford, with California currently holding the top spot in the varsity 8 poll.
Syracuse will also host the Goes Trophy regatta against Navy and Cornell, where senior team captain Reilly Eagan is eager to compete in front of a home crowd for the first time. With a successful 2023 season behind them, Syracuse is poised to build on their achievements and make a strong push for the IRA National Championship.
Stay tuned for more updates on Syracuse men’s rowing as they navigate through the challenges and triumphs of the 2024 season.
