Harding baseball off to hot start with strong offense and resilient play
The Warren G. Harding baseball team has had an explosive start to the 2024 season, relying on their hot bats to secure four consecutive wins. Despite some defensive struggles, the Raiders have shown resilience and determination in their early games.
Head coach Andrew Burnett had initially identified pitching and defense as the team’s strengths, but it’s been the offense that has shined the brightest so far. The Raiders have scored an impressive 34 runs in just four games, with clutch hitting leading them to victory in close contests.
The team’s ability to come from behind and win games in the late innings has been a key factor in their success. In their season opener, Harding overcame an 8-4 deficit to defeat defending champions Lakeview 9-8. They followed up with a defensive battle against Bristol, winning 2-0 behind a stellar pitching performance from senior Carter Knupp.
While the offense has been firing on all cylinders, the defense has struggled, allowing 26 runs and committing numerous errors. Coach Burnett acknowledged the team’s defensive woes, attributing them to a lack of focus and the youth of the infield players.
One bright spot for the Raiders has been shortstop Gummy Hart, who has also contributed on the mound. Hart’s game-winning walk against Lakeview and solid pitching performances have been crucial to Harding’s early success.
The team’s momentum may be affected by the recent rainy weather, which has caused several game cancellations and postponements. Despite the challenges, Harding is looking forward to upcoming matchups against tough opponents like Warren JFK, Hubbard, and Mathews.
Coach Burnett sees the tough schedule as a test for his young team, hoping that facing stiff competition now will pay off in the postseason. With a focus on continued improvement and resilience, the Raiders are aiming to keep their winning streak alive and make a strong playoff push.
