Remembering Auburn Legend Mike Kolen: “Captain Crunch”

Legendary Auburn linebacker Mike Kolen, known as “Captain Crunch” for his rugged tackling, passed away at the age of 76. Kolen, a standout player for Auburn from 1967-69, led the team in tackles for 16 out of 25 games he started and earned All-SEC honors in his junior and senior years.

After his college career, Kolen was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 1970 and went on to play eight seasons with the team, winning back-to-back Super Bowls in 1972 and 1973. Despite his success in the NFL, Kolen always maintained a strong connection to Auburn, returning each year to present the Mike Kolen Award to the team’s leading tackler from the previous season.

Kolen’s impact on and off the field was profound, as he shared his wisdom and experiences with the next generation of players. In his book, “The Greatest Team: A Playbook for Champions,” Kolen reflected on the importance of trust, enthusiasm, attitude, and motivation in achieving success both in football and in life.

Beyond his football career, Kolen found success in real estate, fitness center ownership, and financial services. His time at Auburn, under the guidance of Coach Ralph “Shug” Jordan, instilled in him the values of discipline, commitment, and humility that served him well throughout his life.

A man of deep faith, Kolen was not only a great football player but also a role model and mentor to many. His legacy as a player, leader, and man of integrity will continue to inspire generations to come. Funeral arrangements for Kolen are pending, as the Auburn community mourns the loss of a true legend.
