Sebastian Vettel hints at possible Formula One comeback after talks with Mercedes boss
Four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel has dropped a bombshell by hinting at a potential comeback to the sport after revealing discussions with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.
With Lewis Hamilton set to depart Mercedes for Ferrari at the end of the 2024 season, the Silver Arrows are on the lookout for a new driver to lead their charge into the future. Vettel, who left F1 at the end of the 2022 season after stints with Ferrari and Aston Martin, could be the perfect candidate to fill the void left by Hamilton.
In an interview with Sky Sports News, Vettel admitted to speaking with Wolff about potential opportunities, stating, “I am speaking to Toto. I don’t know if that qualifies as Mercedes, but about other things. I’m talking to a lot of people because I know them, but not very specific.”
The 36-year-old also expressed surprise at Hamilton’s decision to switch teams, saying, “I was surprised, like I guess most of us were. But it is exciting. Obviously he’s looking for a new challenge and it will be different to see him in red, in a different colour.”
While Vettel has been exploring other racing opportunities, including testing a Porsche contender for the Le Mans 24 Hours, the allure of a return to Formula One seems to be growing stronger. When asked about the possibility of competing in Le Mans this year, Vettel remained coy but admitted to being tempted by the idea.
With Vettel’s vast experience and proven track record in the sport, a return to a top team like Mercedes could be a tantalizing prospect for both the German driver and F1 fans worldwide. As the speculation continues to swirl, all eyes will be on Vettel and Mercedes as they navigate the ever-changing landscape of Formula One.
