In an outstanding display of skill and determination, Indian boxers have confirmed a record-breaking 43 medals at the ASBC Asian U-22 & Youth Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. The pugilists have showcased their talent and prowess in the ring, making the nation proud with their exceptional performances.
Leading the charge for India are Akash Gorkha, Vishvanath Suresh, Nikhil, and Preet Malik, who have all advanced to the U-22 men’s finals in their respective weight categories. Akash, the senior national champion, continued his dominant run in the 60kg category with a convincing 5-0 victory over Ilyasov Sayat of Uzbekistan in the semi-finals.
Reigning youth world champion Vishvanath secured a hard-fought 5-2 win against Baricuatro Bryan of the Philippines after a closely contested bout. Nikhil and Preet also emerged victorious in their semi-final matches, both winning by a scoreline of 5-2 after a review of their performances.
While some boxers like M Jadumani Singh, Ajay Kumar, and Ankush had to settle for bronze medals after their losses in the U-22 semis, the Indian contingent remains strong with nine women boxers, including Olympic-bound Preeti, set to compete in the U-22 semi-finals.
The finals for the U-22 category are scheduled for Tuesday, where Indian boxers will look to add more gold medals to their tally. In the youth category, 14 Indian pugilists, including Nisha and Nikita Chand, have advanced to the finals, showcasing the depth of talent in Indian boxing.
Overall, India has secured an impressive 43 medals in the prestigious tournament, with the boxers displaying exceptional skills and determination against tough competition from over 24 countries. The Asian U-22 & Youth Boxing Championships have been a platform for Indian boxers to shine and make their mark on the international stage, and they have certainly delivered with their outstanding performances.
