Sydney Roosters Star Luke Keary Announces Retirement from NRL
After 12 seasons in the NRL, Luke Keary has announced his retirement from the game at the end of the current season, opting out of the final year of his contract with the Sydney Roosters. The five-eighth informed his teammates of his decision on Monday before making the official announcement.
Keary, who will turn 32 this year, emphasized that his choice to retire is not related to the concussions he has suffered throughout his career. “After 27 years playing the game I love, I have decided this (year) will be my last and that I will be retiring at the end of the year,” Keary said. “It’s a decision I have had thought long and hard about and I know it’s the right one for me and my family.”
The Roosters star expressed his gratitude towards the sport and the people who have supported him throughout his career. Keary’s decision to retire comes just months after signing a one-year extension to play until 2025.
Having won premierships with both the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Roosters, Keary leaves behind a legacy of hard work and dedication to the game. Roosters head coach Trent Robinson praised Keary’s integrity and commitment to the team, highlighting his toughness and leadership on and off the field.
As Keary prepares to embark on the next chapter of his life post-retirement, he remains focused on giving his all for the Roosters in the remainder of the 2024 season. His departure will undoubtedly leave a void in the team, but his contributions to the sport will not be forgotten.
