Elderly Care Home Residents Participate in Summer Sports Programme with Caledonia Gladiators
The elderly residents of Whitecraigs Care Home in Glasgow, and Croftbank and Rosepark Care Homes in Uddingston, had a day to remember as they were given a special training session at the Caledonia Gladiators’ Playsport stadium in East Kilbride. The residents, part of the Renaissance Care initiative called There Aren’t Only Old Ideas, were treated to a shooting drill competition on the court, led by professional basketball players.
The summer sports programme aims to encourage people of all ages across Scotland to engage in a summer of sport, and the care home residents were no exception. With the help of players like Patrick Whelan, Ian Dubose, Samantha Roscoe, and Kian Omer-Jones, the residents were given tips and encouragement to focus on small fitness goals.
Iain Harris, a 91-year-old resident, expressed his enjoyment of the training session, saying, “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed myself. I am a golfer at heart but now that I’ve watched basketball up close, I like what I’m seeing and am looking forward to a summer of sport.”
The initiative was also praised by Tony McDaid, CEO of Caledonia Gladiators, who highlighted the importance of engaging with local communities and breaking down barriers to sport for people of all ages. Annette Frew, wellbeing lead at Rosepark Care Home, noted that their residents were “incredibly excited” to participate in the event and emphasized the importance of wellbeing in their care approach.
Overall, the day was a success, with the residents enjoying a unique and engaging experience at the stadium. As they continue to work with the professional basketball team throughout the summer, it is clear that the Renaissance Care initiative is making a positive impact on the lives of the elderly residents and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for all.
