Cycling Without Age McHenry County Returns for Fifth Season with New Public Ride Locations

Cycling Without Age McHenry County is gearing up for its fifth season, bringing back its heartwarming mission of providing free bike rides to older adults in the community. With new public ride locations in Cary and Petersen Park in McHenry, the volunteer-run organization is expanding its reach and impact.

President Greg Glover expressed his excitement for the upcoming season, stating, “The more people we can help, the better. It’s an amazing program because it’s sort of this simple but powerful thing.” The organization’s goal is to reduce loneliness and social isolation among older adults in McHenry County, a mission they have been successfully fulfilling since their inception.

The public rides, scheduled for Saturday mornings throughout the summer, offer a unique opportunity for older adults to enjoy a 15-minute ride on a trishaw, a three-wheeled bicycle with electric assist that can accommodate two passengers. Family members are encouraged to join in on the fun, making it a memorable experience for all involved.

With over 3,000 chapters worldwide, Cycling Without Age has made a significant impact on the lives of older adults globally. In McHenry County, the organization has seen tremendous growth since its establishment in 2019, with 60 trained volunteers and four trishaws now in operation. Last year alone, they provided nearly 1,150 rides to older adults in the community.

Volunteers like Carl Edstrom and Eric Parker have found immense joy in being part of the organization, witnessing firsthand the positive impact it has on the riders. Edstrom shared, “We were their opportunity to get out. People talk about it being about freedom and getting the wind in their hair.” Parker echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of bringing joy to the “winter of their years.”

As Cycling Without Age McHenry County continues to expand its services to senior care facilities, they are in need of more volunteers and donations to support their growing operations. Those interested in getting involved can visit the organization’s website for more information on how to participate in the public rides or contribute to their cause. With a schedule of upcoming rides at various locations, there are plenty of opportunities to make a difference in the lives of older adults in McHenry County.
