Manchester City’s Phil Foden Named Footballer of the Year by English Football Writers’ Association
Manchester City’s Phil Foden has been crowned the Footballer of the Year by the English Football Writers’ Association, adding his name to a prestigious list of past winners. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder joins the likes of Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, George Best, and Kenny Dalglish in receiving this esteemed award.
Foden, who has scored an impressive 24 goals this season, becomes the third Manchester City player in the past four years to win this accolade, following in the footsteps of Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland. The young star received 42 percent of the votes, beating out competition from Arsenal’s Declan Rice and his teammate Rodri.
“It’s a huge honor to be named the Football Writers’ Association footballer of the year,” said Foden. “I couldn’t have achieved this without the support of my teammates.”
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola praised Foden’s impact on the team but also challenged him to continue improving. “He has the potential to get even better,” Guardiola said. “It depends on him and his mentality to keep pushing himself to new heights.”
In the women’s category, Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw, also known as “Bunny,” was named the Women’s Footballer of the Year. The Jamaica international, who has scored 21 goals in the Women’s Super League, edged out Chelsea’s Lauren James for the award.
Shaw expressed her gratitude for the recognition, crediting her teammates for their support. Despite missing the final two games of the season due to injury, Shaw is on track to finish as the top scorer in the WSL as Manchester City closes in on the title.
Both Foden and Shaw have proven themselves as standout performers this season, and their awards are a testament to their hard work and dedication on the field.
