Nelson Boxing Club Named Best in B.C. and Receives Multiple Awards

The Nelson Boxing Club has once again proven its dominance in the ring, being named the best club in B.C. by BC Boxing. The club received three prestigious awards during the annual awards ceremony held in Salmon Arm on April 27, solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in the boxing world.

Among the recipients of the awards were Riel Martinez, who was named the best youth boxer, and Jack Dool, who received the student-athlete award. This is the second time that Nelson has been honored with the provincial award, with their first win coming in 2018.

The club’s success in 2023 was truly remarkable, with fighters representing Team B.C. and Team Canada at international events in Mexico, Ireland, and Colombia. In addition, they clinched three provincial titles in November and saw one of their athletes, Lola Brouillette, named the city’s sports ambassador.

Head coach Jesse Pineiro expressed his pride in the club’s achievements, especially considering the challenges they faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the obstacles, Nelson continued to produce top-notch fighters who excelled at both the provincial and national levels.

Martinez’s recognition was particularly noteworthy, as he won a provincial title in November at just a young age. His victory came just days after the tragic passing of his brother, making his accomplishment even more remarkable.

Dool, on the other hand, was honored with the Jimmy Syms Award for his sportsmanship and positive presence in the club and community. Pineiro praised Dool for his unwavering dedication and positivity, highlighting his exceptional character both inside and outside the ring.

In a fitting conclusion to the club’s success, Pineiro himself was selected as one of nine coaches for the Canadian national team. This achievement is a culmination of his lifelong dedication to the sport and his commitment to producing top-tier fighters.

Overall, the Nelson Boxing Club’s recognition as the best club in B.C. is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and unwavering passion for the sport of boxing. They have truly solidified their place as a force to be reckoned with in the boxing world.
