Big Ten Basketball Teams and the University of Washington: A Look Back at the Intersectional Series

The University of Washington Huskies basketball team is set to renew its rivalry with Big Ten teams as they join the conference for the upcoming season. This move will bring back memories of past matchups, including a highly anticipated visit from Purdue and their star guard Rick Mount in 1967.

Mount, a high-scoring sophomore guard, was a sensation in college basketball, known for his prolific scoring ability. His visit to Seattle to face the Huskies drew massive crowds and excitement. In their first meeting, the Huskies managed to contain Mount, holding him to 23 points and pulling off a stunning upset over the No. 7 Boilermakers.

The following night, Mount bounced back with a 30-point performance to lead Purdue to victory, splitting the series with the Huskies. The games were played at Hec Edmundson Pavilion, creating an electric atmosphere that left a lasting impression on fans.

Since then, Purdue hasn’t returned to Seattle to face the Huskies, but that will change in the upcoming season as Washington prepares to host Big Ten teams in conference play. The addition of the Huskies to the Big Ten will bring new matchups and rivalries to college basketball fans.

As for Rick Mount, he went on to have a successful career in professional basketball, playing in the ABA and becoming the No. 1 overall draft pick for the Indiana Pacers. Despite his accomplishments, Mount will always be remembered for his college days and the excitement he brought to the game.

With the upcoming season promising exciting matchups against Big Ten teams, Huskies fans can look forward to reliving the glory days of past encounters and creating new memories in the conference. Stay tuned for more updates on UW basketball and football news at si.com/college/washington.
