Rabbitohs CEO apologises to players for handling of Jason Demetriou’s sacking
South Sydney Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly has issued an apology to the playing group for the way in which the firing of former coach Jason Demetriou was handled. The revelation that some players found out about Demetriou’s sacking through the media has sparked controversy and criticism towards the club’s management.
In a candid 17-minute interview on NRL360, Solly addressed the circumstances surrounding Demetriou’s axing and the challenges the Rabbitohs have faced in their recent struggles on the field. The team has only managed to secure five wins out of their last 20 premiership games, a disappointing record for a club of their stature.
Demetriou’s abrupt dismissal came after a board meeting on Tuesday night, with most players learning about the decision through a text message from their former coach. Some players even found out about the sacking through a phone call from a journalist during an episode of NRL360, prompting co-host James Graham to express his disappointment at the lack of communication from the club.
Solly acknowledged the mishandling of the situation and expressed regret for not informing the players in person. He admitted that the timing of the decision did not allow for a face-to-face discussion with the team, but assured that the players were addressed and apologized to during a meeting the following day.
Former Sharks player Wade Graham also criticized the handling of Demetriou’s departure, questioning the club’s professionalism and integrity. Demetriou’s agent, Chris Orr, labeled the club’s process as “extremely cruel” and expressed disappointment in how the situation was handled.
Despite the backlash, Solly defended the club’s decision, emphasizing the need for results and performance on the field. He highlighted the team’s recent poor performance as a contributing factor to the coaching change, while acknowledging Demetriou’s hard work and dedication during his tenure with the Rabbitohs.
