Community Rallies Around First-Grader Rocco DiMaggio in His Fight Against Cancer
In a heartwarming display of support and solidarity, the Staten Island community came together to rally behind Rocco DiMaggio, a brave first-grader at PS 5 in Huguenot who is battling neuroblastoma for the second time. Despite facing a rare and aggressive form of cancer, Rocco’s spirit and determination have inspired many.
Last weekend, Rocco was made an honorary captain for the Mustangs’ flag football team in the Next Level Flag Football League. The fourth-grade team, along with their coach Joe Columbia, embraced Rocco wholeheartedly, making him feel like a true part of the team. The league’s director, Richie Milo, fully supported the idea, and a touching video created by Matt DeSimone captured the hearts of thousands on social media.
During the game between the Mustangs and the Browns, Rocco ran through a tunnel of players, participated in the coin toss, and even scored a touchdown with the support of both teams cheering him on. The outpouring of love and encouragement from the community was evident, showing Rocco that he is not alone in his fight.
Rocco, now 6 years old, has already undergone extensive treatment for his condition, including chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and immunotherapy. Despite the challenges ahead, Rocco’s family remains hopeful and grateful for the support they have received.
A GoFund Me page has been set up to help with Rocco’s medical expenses, and the response has been overwhelming, with nearly $140,000 raised towards the $250,000 goal. The generosity and kindness shown towards Rocco and his family are a testament to the strength of the Staten Island community.
As Rocco continues his battle against neuroblastoma, the love and support surrounding him serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all those who know his story. #RoccoStrong.
