Harvard Baseball Drops Series to Brown, Looks Ahead to Beanpot and Cornell
Harvard Baseball Drops Series to Brown in Home Opener
After a tough loss to Columbia in their Ivy League opener, the Harvard baseball team returned home to face off against Brown in their home opener last weekend. The Crimson split a doubleheader on Saturday at Boston College’s Eddie Pellagrini Diamond before returning to O’Donnell Field on Sunday for the rubber match.
In the first game on Saturday, Harvard fell to Brown 4-2 despite a strong pitching performance from junior ace Sean Matson. The Crimson struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, leaving runners stranded on base throughout the game.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Harvard bounced back with a 7-5 victory behind a stellar performance from sophomore Callan Fang, who earned Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors for his efforts. Fang’s strong outing on the mound and at the plate helped the Crimson even up the series.
In the series decider on Sunday, Harvard found themselves in a deep hole early on as Brown jumped out to a 12-0 lead. Despite the deficit, the Crimson mounted an impressive comeback, scoring six runs in the third inning and chipping away at Brown’s lead throughout the game. However, the Bears ultimately held on for a 20-12 victory, handing Harvard a series loss.
Looking ahead, the Crimson will shift their focus to the Baseball Beanpot, a Boston tradition that kicks off on Tuesday with a semifinal matchup against Boston College. The team will then travel to Ithaca to take on Cornell in hopes of securing their first Ivy League series win of the season.
Junior outfielder George Cooper expressed excitement for the upcoming games, highlighting the opportunity to participate in Boston tradition and play in front of friends and family. The Crimson will look to build on their resilience from the series against Brown and carry that momentum into the upcoming matchups.
The Beanpot semifinal will be streamed live on ESPN+ at 3:00 p.m. today, offering fans a chance to support the Crimson as they continue their quest for success on the diamond.
