AIC First XV Rugby Rd 1: Howard Brothers Shine, Laurie’s Climb Heartbreak Hill, Padua and Saints March In
The AIC First XV rugby season kicked off with a bang as the Howard brothers from Ashgrove dazzled the crowd with their exceptional performance. Tom Howard, the captain, and Xavier Howard were instrumental in Ashgrove’s 48-10 victory over Villanova. Tom Howard, the fullback, showcased his electrifying skills by setting up tries with his elusive ball carrying, while Xavier Howard, making his debut, made excellent decisions on the field.
The match at Runcorn between St Laurence’s and Iona College was a nail-biter, with St Laurence’s emerging victorious with a last-gasp try by hero Tom Nadenic. The Laurie’s forwards, led by Nadenic and Den Davis, displayed great determination and resilience throughout the game, ultimately securing a dramatic win.
Meanwhile, at Banyo, Padua College secured a convincing 43-15 win over St Patrick’s, with lock Will Ross making a stunning debut for the home side. Padua’s five-eight, Damon Humphrys, orchestrated the game with his kicking game, leading his team to a comprehensive victory.
St Edmund’s also had a successful outing, defeating St Peters 25-15 at Indooroopilly. Fly half Tiger Campbell was the standout player, scoring 20 of his team’s 25 points and showcasing his maturity as a player. St Peters dominated at scrum time, but St Edmund’s resilience and teamwork proved to be the difference in the end.
