Jay Bothroyd Aims to Increase Diversity in Golf Through New Project
Former England striker Jay Bothroyd is on a mission to make golf more accessible and diverse for young players. The ex-footballer, who started his career at Arsenal before moving on to various clubs including Cardiff and QPR, has found a new passion for the fairway during the Covid-19 pandemic.
While in Japan at Sapporo, Bothroyd began to take a keen interest in golf as a way to stay active under the restrictions. Now, he is using his platform to promote the sport and break down any socio-economic barriers that may prevent young players from getting involved.
Bothroyd, who is supporting Prostate Cancer UK’s Big Golf Race fundraising challenge, hosts a YouTube channel with PGA pro Trey Niven. The OuttaBoundz Show aims to showcase golf in a new light and encourage more people to give it a try.
“We want to show the next generation that golf is not just a boring sport for middle-aged white men – it is for everyone,” Bothroyd told the PA news agency. “We want to help create opportunities for anyone to play golf, regardless of their background or financial situation.”
By working with organizations like the Golf Foundation, Bothroyd hopes to provide access to clubs and equipment for those who may not have the means to purchase them. Through clinics and events, he is introducing young people to the game and showing them that golf can be fun and inclusive.
Bothroyd’s efforts are not only focused on promoting golf but also on raising awareness and funds for prostate cancer research. With his father being treated for the disease last year, Bothroyd is passionate about supporting initiatives like the Big Golf Race to help save men’s lives.
