Maro Itoje Cleared of Suspension for High Tackle: Independent Panel Dismisses Citing Complaint
Maro Itoje, the Saracens second row, can breathe a sigh of relief as he has avoided suspension for a high tackle during a recent match against Bath. The citing complaint against him was dismissed after an independent disciplinary panel reviewed rear replays of the incident and determined that the initial contact was on the chest and not the head of Bath’s Alfie Barbeary.
The England forward was at risk of facing a minimum two-match ban for the dangerous tackle, but the panel’s decision means he will remain available for Saracens at a crucial stage of the Premiership season. Despite being sin-binned during the game, referee Luke Pearce did not show Itoje a red card as the contact was not direct head-on-head, a decision that was ultimately supported by the disciplinary panel.
Saracens have two games left in the regular season, against Bristol and Sale, and are on track to secure a spot in the play-offs as they aim to defend their Premiership title. The news of Itoje’s availability will come as a relief to the team and fans alike.
In a statement, the RFU confirmed the dismissal of the citing complaint, allowing Itoje to return to action immediately. Panel chair, Philip Evans KC, explained that after reviewing the footage from various angles, it was determined that the level of danger was not significant enough to warrant a suspension.
With Itoje back in the lineup, Saracens will be looking to maintain their momentum and secure a strong finish to the season. The second row’s presence will undoubtedly bolster the team’s chances as they push for another Premiership title.
