Sawtell Panthers make a statement in 2024 season opener, despite draw with Grafton Ghosts

The Sawtell Panthers may not have come away with the win in their season opener, but they certainly made a statement to the competition with their impressive performance against the Grafton Ghosts.

Leading 12-6 in the final moments of the game, the Panthers looked poised to secure the victory. However, Ghosts hooker Mason Graham had other plans as he scored his second try of the game from dummy-half to level the scores after the bell, with Cooper Woods converting to ensure both teams took home a point.

Sawtell captain Sam Johnstone expressed his disappointment at not securing the win, but acknowledged the Ghosts’ resilience and competitiveness throughout the game. Despite leading 12-0 well into the second half, the Panthers were unable to hold off Graham’s late double, which ultimately cost them the victory.

Despite the draw, the Panthers have shown that they are no longer the easybeats of the competition. With a strong defensive performance and three tries to their name, the team has set a positive tone for the rest of the season.

The local fans showed their support for the Panthers, braving the rain to create a lively atmosphere at the game. Johnstone expressed his gratitude for the community’s support and emphasized the team’s determination to improve and learn from their mistakes.

Looking ahead, the Panthers face a tough challenge as they travel to Woolgoolga to take on the defending premiers. However, with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and grow, the Panthers are ready to take on whatever challenges come their way.

After their impressive performance against the Ghosts, the Panthers have proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in the competition, and they are determined to continue their upward trajectory in the 2024 season.
