Premier League Considering Overseas Matches, NBC Sports Eager to Bring Games to American Audiences
Premier League Matches Could Be Heading to the USA
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters recently hinted at the possibility of English top-flight matches being played overseas, with the door left slightly ajar for such a move. While there are currently no concrete plans in place, a high-ranking executive at NBC Sports, the broadcaster that holds the rights to screen the Premier League in the United States, has expressed a strong interest in bringing games to American audiences.
The idea of playing Premier League matches abroad is not a new one, as it was previously proposed 16 years ago with the controversial “Game 39” concept. However, the backlash from fans and pressure from FIFA ultimately led to the idea being scrapped.
Despite this history, two Premier League clubs, Chelsea and Manchester City, are set to play competitive games in the United States in the summer of 2025 as part of FIFA’s Club World Cup. This move could pave the way for more Premier League matches to be held in the USA in the future.
NBC Sports’ president of acquisitions and partnerships, Jon Miller, has expressed his support for bringing Premier League games to American soil. He believes that there is a strong American audience eager to watch regular-season matches and is keen to work with the Premier League to make this a reality.
While there are no immediate plans for Premier League matches to be played in the USA, the possibility remains open for the future. American fans of English football may soon have the opportunity to watch their favorite teams in action on home soil.
