Declan Rice hits back at critics over goalscoring record: “Unfair criticism from Keane and Souness”
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has fired back at critics who have questioned his goalscoring record in the past, including former football legends Roy Keane and Graeme Souness. The England international, who recently scored the winning goal against Luton at Kenilworth Road, believes the criticism was unjustified given the playing styles of those who made the comments.
During his time at West Ham, Rice faced scrutiny over his lack of goals, with Keane, Souness, and Jamie Redknapp all pointing out this area of his game. However, since joining Arsenal in a big-money move, Rice has already surpassed his previous season’s goal and assist tally in the Premier League.
In a recent interview with The Athletic, Rice defended himself by highlighting the playing styles of his critics, stating that they were not known for their goalscoring abilities either. He pointed out that Keane and Souness were remembered for their defensive midfield qualities rather than their goal-scoring prowess.
Rice also took a light-hearted jab at Keane after scoring against Manchester United earlier this season, jokingly asking for his opinion on the goal. Keane humorously replied with “Own goal,” referencing a slight deflection the ball took after Rice’s strike.
Despite the banter, Rice acknowledged that he has become more ruthless in front of goal and is now willing to take more shots when the opportunity arises. The 25-year-old midfielder emphasized the importance of being proactive in front of goal, stating that “if you don’t shoot, you don’t score.”
With his improved goalscoring form and strong performances for Arsenal, Rice is proving his critics wrong and establishing himself as a key player for both club and country.
