Rhys Carre explains Cardiff departure and move to Saracens
Wales prop Rhys Carre bid farewell to Cardiff as he prepares to rejoin Saracens this summer, citing a stagnation in his international career as the reason for his departure.
The 26-year-old, who made his last appearance for Cardiff in Saturday’s United Rugby Championship defeat to Edinburgh, expressed his frustration at not being able to break back into the Wales squad since being released from Warren Gatland’s World Cup training squad last summer.
Carre, who has only 20 caps for Wales, explained that his decision to leave Cardiff was not based on the club itself, but rather on his desire to reignite his international career. Despite feeling that he has improved every year at the club level, Carre believes that he has been overlooked for international selection.
The former Wales Under-18 captain was part of Gatland’s squad at the 2019 World Cup and made three substitute appearances for Wales in the 2023 Six Nations. However, after failing to meet performance targets, Carre was released from the Wales training group last June.
Carre expressed his disappointment at not being able to secure a spot in the national team despite his club performances, stating that sometimes things are just not meant to be. Moving to Saracens will provide him with a fresh start and an opportunity to push himself to new heights.
As he looks ahead to his future in London, Carre is determined to break free from the stagnation he has felt since the 2019 World Cup and strive for greater success in his rugby career. His departure from Cardiff marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of a new chapter for the talented prop.
