21-year-old Lithuanian Mykolas Alakna breaks oldest men’s record in athletics
21-year-old Lithuanian discus thrower Mykolas Alakna made headlines earlier this month when he broke the oldest men’s record in athletics at a meet in Ramona, Oklahoma. Alakna, whose father is a two-time Olympic champion and double World Championship gold medallist, threw the discus to a distance of 74.35 metres, surpassing the previous record set by German Jürgen Schult in 1986.
In an interview with The Indian Express, Alakna’s father Virgilijus shared insights into his son’s technique, the switch from football to discus, and the importance of medals over records. Virgilijus revealed that he always hoped his sons would follow in his footsteps but never pushed them to do so. He praised Mykolas’ unique throwing technique, emphasizing his precision, speed, and coordination.
Despite starting discus throwing at the age of 16 after playing football, Mykolas quickly showed promise with his far-flying discus and improving results. Virgilijus expressed pride in his son’s achievements and advised him to enjoy the process, prioritize titles and medals, and avoid rushing things.
Reflecting on his own career, Virgilijus admitted that while he aimed to break Schult’s world record, it never materialized. He focused on winning gold at major championships, emphasizing the importance of coaching and his sons’ coach Mantas Jusis in their success.
With three throwers in the family, discus is a common topic at home, along with Mykolas’ love for fishing. Virgilijus highlighted the changes in discus throwing over the years, noting the increased competition and naming current top throwers like Kristjan Čeh and Daniel Stahl. He expressed excitement for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, where Mykolas will compete against his rivals.
As Mykolas Alakna continues to make waves in the world of athletics, his family’s support and guidance play a crucial role in his success on and off the field.
