Carlos Alcaraz cruises into last 16 of Madrid Open with win over Thiago Seyboth Wild
In a dominant display, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz breezed into the last 16 of the Madrid Open with a straight-sets victory over Thiago Seyboth Wild. The world number three showed no signs of discomfort as he continued his quest for a third consecutive title at the prestigious event.
Alcaraz, who won the Madrid Open in 2022 and 2023, broke his opponent twice in each set to secure a comfortable 6-3 6-3 win in just 75 minutes. Despite wearing a compression sleeve on his right arm due to a recent injury, the 20-year-old Spaniard looked in fine form on the court.
With a win percentage of 93.3% at the Madrid Open, Alcaraz has been a force to be reckoned with in the tournament. He will now face Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in the last 16, setting up a rematch of the 2023 final.
In other matches, Russian seventh seed Andrey Rublev and Polish eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz also advanced to the next round with victories over their respective opponents. In the women’s bracket, second seed Aryna Sabalenka had to battle hard to overcome unseeded American Robin Montgomery in a thrilling three-set encounter.
However, the biggest upset of the day came as Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova was knocked out by 16-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva in straight sets. The Madrid Open continues to deliver exciting matches and surprises as the top players compete for glory on the clay courts.
