Controversial Penalty Decisions in Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 Loss at Everton: PGMOL Chief Howard Webb Speaks Out

Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 loss at Everton was marred by controversy as they had three separate penalty appeals dismissed by referee Anthony Taylor, with VAR Stuart Attwell endorsing the on-field decisions. However, PGMOL chief Howard Webb has now weighed in on the situation, suggesting that Forest would likely have been awarded at least one penalty in the match.

Speaking on Match Officials Mic’d Up, which airs tonight on Sky Sports Premier League at 7pm, Webb highlighted Ashley Young’s tackle on Callum Hudson-Odoi as a key moment that should have seen referee Taylor consult the pitchside monitor. Webb stated, “We would have preferred an intervention on this situation for the referee to go to the screen to make a judgement for himself in this situation and probably would have come out with a different outcome if that would’ve happened.”

Regarding the other two incidents, Webb explained, “The first two we felt were really subjective calls.” He mentioned minimal contact in the first incident involving Ashley Young and Gio Reyna, and a handball penalty situation in the second incident where the ball hit Young’s arm. The VAR checks supported the referee’s decisions in both cases.
