Indian Boxers Shine at ASBC Asian U-22 and Youth Boxing Championships in Astana
In a thrilling day of boxing action at the ASBC Asian U-22 and Youth Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, Indian boxers Vishvanath Suresh, Akash Gorkha, and Preet Malik shone bright as they advanced to the men’s U-22 semi-finals with impressive victories in their respective bouts.
Reigning youth world champion Vishvanath (48kg) set the tone for India’s success as he dominated his quarterfinal bout against Iran’s Hassani Seyedarsham, winning by a convincing 5-0 margin. Senior national champion Akash (60kg) followed suit with a similar 5-0 victory over Ebadi Arman of Iran, showcasing his class in the ring.
Preet (67kg) wasted no time in dispatching his opponent, Nguyen Duc Ngoc of Vietnam, with a Referee Stopping the Contest (RSC) decision in the first round itself. However, Kunal (75kg) couldn’t replicate his compatriots’ success and bowed out after a tough 0-5 loss to Iran’s Mahshari Mohammad in the quarter-finals.
The Indian contingent will have more chances to shine as Jugnoo (86kg), Rhythm (+92kg), Tammana (50kg), Preeti (54kg), and Priyanka (60kg) gear up for their U-22 quarter-final bouts later in the day. The U-22 semi-finals are scheduled to take place on Saturday, with the finals set for May 7.
